‘I remember that [semester] in Dublin’: A Personal Impression
In the spring of 2017 I studied abroad in Dublin, Ireland. It was a life changing experience and offered a balance of work and play. Here is what I left thinking:
I will always remember my semester spent in Dublin. I cherish my memories of the unique city, the smell of peat, stepping in dog poop on the sidewalk, the grey skies and the green grass. I had no real expectations coming into Dublin, but I did have two goals that I kept in mind on my plane ride across the Atlantic Ocean. I wanted to adventure and have fun. It is safe to say that I have certainly succeeded in accomplishing those goals, plus much more.
At first I thought I wouldn’t be able to get used to the drunks falling down in the streets, the filthy sidewalks or the incredibly long walk to school. However, as the semester went on I learned to appreciate these aspects of Dublin. They are the sort of things that give Dublin character and charm. I will miss the friendly nature of everyone in public and having interesting conversations with strangers. There is definitely better craic here in Dublin than back home in Burlington.
I am thankful for my friendships in Dublin, both new and old. I came abroad with my three best friends and am returning home with many more. All of our days were spent adventuring, drinking pints and laughing. Exploring and discovering the world with my friends has built a solid bond between us that cannot fully be described. These friendships are one of the things that will stick with me forever after my aboard experience.
Early on in the semester, I found the easiest and most entertaining way to immerse myself in Irish culture was through the nightlife. So my friends and I took advantage of what Dublin had to offer. We had some of the craziest and funniest nights, which we gossiped about over coffee the next morning. I think I may even miss walking into school every morning hung-over and listening to Ciaran make fun of us for the stamps on our hand and our “delicate” appearance. I know that I can always look back at our drunken club and pub photos and laugh at the good times.
My experience in Dublin has offered me so many opportunities. I have been able to continue my passion for travel and gain new perspectives on the world. I have learned to be independent and accomplish goals. I have been forced to be courageous and brave. I am thankful for all of this and more, there is little that could compare to my time here in Dublin. Dublin feels like home and I am sad to leave but know that I will be back again soon.
